Mark and Pieter Diks, both descendants of the ‘DICO’ family, join their enterprising spirits in the late 1970s and early 1980s to start their own retail company. This marks the first step towards the establishment of a company specialising in sleeping comfort that will later develop into the Beter Bed chain.
Following careful preparations and an early close of the offering due to a high demand for shares, the initial listing on the Amsterdam stock exchange becomes a fact on 2 December 1996. Beter Bed has been listed on the Euronext Amsterdam under security code BBED NL0000339703 since that date.
With its focus on international expansion in the bed and mattress market, Beter Bed acquires the German mattress specialty store chain Matratzen Concord AG in late 1998. At the time of the acquisition, this fast-growing cash & carry format based in Germany also has stores in other European countries including Austria and Switzerland.
Beter Bed establishes its DBC International subsidiary and launches an in-house developed mattress line under the name M line. These M line mattresses have unique pressure-reducing qualities and are patented. The developed M line mattresses, pillows and sleeping systems ensure a perfect sleeping position and closely follow the contours of the body to enable full relaxation and recuperation during a night’s rest.
Beter Bed Holding N.V. announces in September 2005 that it has reached an agreement on the 100% acquisition of Spanish bed chain El Gigante del Colchón. At the time of the acquisition, El Gigante has 20 stores in the Barcelona area. Beter Bed adds a profitable chain to its activities and gains a good basis for further growth in Spain through this acquisition.
The celebration of this silver jubilee focuses primarily on customers through the introduction of a special 25th anniversary range featuring a number of attractive special offers. The year concludes with an anniversary party for all the employees and their families at the distribution centre in Uden.
The 25th anniversary of Matratzen Concord is also cause for celebration. This jubilee likewise focuses on customers and is celebrated fittingly through special anniversary offers. The Matratzen Concord employees in Europe mark this milestone with a party in true German tradition.
Beter Bed decides in 2013 to give the company a more high-quality and attractive positioning, without in any way tampering with the crucial reassurance that Beter Bed offers the best price for good quality. The newly introduced Beter Bed logo is contemporary and friendly, but is not too far removed from the trusted former logo in part thanks to the use of the same colour combination. The exteriors and interiors of the Beter Bed stores are restyled to create a more contemporary and warm look.
Beter Bed Holding acquires ‘BettenMax’ in Austria in October 2015. At the time of the acquisition, BettenMax is a leading Austrian discount mattress and bed textiles retailer with 18 stores, 50 employees and annual revenue of approximately € 5 million. The format corresponds with Matratzen Concord’s business model and retail format, making it possible to achieve operational, commercial and financial synergy.
Beter Bed Holding announces the successful completion of the acquisition of Sängjätten. This leading Swedish value-for-money retailer in box springs, beds and bed textiles has 16 own stores in Sweden, 50 employees and annual revenue of approximately € 10 million. The company also has a franchise network comprising nine stores. The acquisition consists of acquiring the company’s assets.
Beter Bed is named the Netherlands’ Best Retail Chain 2016-2017 in the Bedroom Furnishings category. The Management Board of Beter Bed Benelux furthermore has the honour of receiving an award for Best Web Shop in the Netherlands 2016-2017, also in the Bedroom Furnishings category. It is a wonderful commendation from satisfied customers for all the employees’ hard work.
Beter Bed wins for the second year in a row the award for Best Web Shop in the Netherlands in the bedroom furnishings category and gets the title 'Best Retail Chain 2017-2018' in the same category.
